1) Always carry your valuable items like jewellery , laptop and other things, you can't live without in the hand bag. Always carry an extra pair of clothes, undergarments, i-pod, medicines, extra pair of specs so that you can survive even if your baggage is delayed
2) Remember that the hand luggage should as per the permitted size. In-case its over the weight limit and size then the staff can ask you to take out few stuff from the bag. Be ready to take out the things from your bag.
3) Infant is allowed baggage allowance of 10kg and can vary from airline to airline.Please do not forget to check the little one's baggage allowance.
4) Most of the Airlines have restricted the quantity of the liquid that can be carried. Don't get your own drinking water bottle as you would need to dispose off the same at the security. The liquid limit is only 100ml (can vary from Airline) and you have to carry this in the transparent plastic bag only.
5) Weight of the baggage plays the important role in the Airline Travel. Few of the Airlines do accept the bags even if the weight is exceeding by 5-8kg but this is not fixed and don't be surprised if you are asked to pay extra charge for taking 5kg extra

10) Always retain the baggage tags as if your bags are lost then these tags would help you to trace the bags
11) Make sure that you check regarding the baggage transfer policy in case of multiple sectors.
I know that if you are transferring from Heathrow to Gatwick then the bags are not through checked-in . The customers need to pick up the bags from Heathrow Airport and again recheck in the bags at Gatwick.
